The perfect storm nightmare of two my least favorite companies, Sirius and Honda, has finally come true! :D
We canceled our XM service after 3 years of relative consistency, took a hiatus, but are looking to re-up. So I went online, found a promo deal, and spent over an hour on the phone with them trying to get it working. All we get is “no signal” on every station, no matter how many times they refresh the code.
Finally, the third agent (a “Level 2" type of tech support worker) said the only remaining option is to take the van back to the dealer. I’m reluctant to do this because a lot of people across different makes/models have talked about doing hard resets of their HUs to make this work , and that Sirius will always recommend the dealer as a lazy CYA for themselves.
On one hand, it’s weird that a fully enclosed piece of electronics (on a non-German car) would just die after just four years . On the other hand, 90% of the problems we’ve had with the van are HU-related, so it’s not totally crazy.
Any experiences/advice before I go drop my drawers and
worship at the altar of Soichiro
throw myself to the mercy of the technicians? 2015 Odyssey, FWIW.

Honda’s unit is pure fucking garbage. Underpowered under-developed trash.
Hold down the dimmer switch while pressing the audio off and menu buttons at the same time. This takes for-fucking-ever.

Thanks! Not surprised they cut corners on anything that’s not running gear-related.
Where is the dimmer switch you’re referring to? Is this the procedure for an HU restart?
I’ve been doing some research and it sounds like the place to start is the roof antenna, then the XM module near the subwoofer (inner left rear quarter panel). Then the HU. Cheaper and easier to just buy a removable XM unit...

This is the procedure the dealer does and calls a “hard reset.” It isn’t a hard reset. You don’t have the tool for a true hard reset though. It’s just a hard reboot. So believe it or not, the Sirius tech support guy? He’s not bullshitting or CYA’ing. He’s telling you the truth of what’s broke.
I presume they’re referring to the interior light dimmer switch though. Because of course Honda would do something that fucking stupid. Also, it’s not fucking consistent - some of them it’s “hold the volume button and press menu”, others it’s “disconnect your battery.”
Really the problem is that it’s a shittily written, even shittier implementation of an Android-based shitshow. The XM isn’t working because the RAM’s fucked and the thing doesn’t reboot unless you ‘hard reset’ it. It just hibernates! Terrible, stupid, incompetent fucking design. Even Cadillac CUE was less idiotic.
Oh, and you probably need a firmware update. Which I’m sure the dealer will charge you $150+ for. And is only available by going to the dealer, who will plug in a specially formatted USB stick and wait 10-15 minutes.

Have you tried disconnecting the main car battery for ~10 minutes?
Sometimes that’s enough to reboot everything.

I did a quick disconnect/reconnect, but I didn’t wait too long. Figured it was a longshot anyway. All signs point to a bad XM antenna or module. At this point I’m just canceling the service and will eventually take it in to the shop for a formal diagnosis. 2 hours of wasted time and frustration today, at some point it’s easier to just use the phone to stream music or just buy/
play CDs (Amazon offers free digital copies with them too)
.

Does the car have a memory card slot or USB connection
?
Just download whatever music you want illegally, then load it up that way.

Infotainment systems - the automaker’s easy way to worm an extra $1000 out of you quickly and easily at purchase, then $1000 more over the span of the year as their service departments make vague attempts to fix it.

The sound quality of satellite radio is so bad I can’t stand listening to it. I can tell how low the bitrate is with the windows open on the highway.

Yep, USB. Fair enough point, but the main reason for wanting it is that someone else curates all the music and categorizes it. We listen to a lot of terrestrial radio now, but too many ads and not enough variety. Owning your music also means keeping up with it and organizing it constantly. I’m lucky if I have time to make an Amazon playlist a couple times a year. I’d much rather just crank up a Pandora/Amazon station (or Spotify, which I don’t use) and let their algorithm earn its keep :D
Plus it’s a great way to discover new music. If I choose my own stuff, I stick with what I know.
